March 31st the trail becomes hard packed by the snowmobiles over the course of the winter. But as the sun gets higher and the weather warmer they have begun to thaw. Last year we were able to drive up to the mines by the third week of April. Hopefully we can do the same this year. It will be mid May before the mines are ice free and we can drain them again. It's really quite amazing how quickly they refilled, but when they were in operation it was a constant battle with the ground water seeping in....
